George Ferguson's 30-year professional career has involved the planning and implementation of fund raising programs for national, regional, and local organizations. He has been a board member, volunteer, donor, professional staff member, and consultant. Wearing these different hats has resulted in an enduring respect and understanding of fund raising and philanthropy.
George has served as Director of University Development and
Alumni Relations for Adelphi University in Garden City, New
York, where he oversaw development for the university and
seven colleges. He also served as Campaign Director for New
York Medical College, a medical university located in
Valhalla, New York, and as a senior advisor to Rev. Msgr.
James P. Cassidy, Ph.D., Chancellor, and his successor, Rev.
Harry C. Barrett, D. Min., President.
During 30 years of campaigning and 16
years of consulting, George has served many different types
of not-for-profit organizations and has completed numerous
planning and feasibility studies, development audits, major
gifts programs, leadership development efforts, and campaign
implementations. He has provided service in many settings,
including higher education, healthcare, arts and culture,
museums, social welfare, environment, youth organizations,
and Olympic sports.
George has held the
Certified Fund Raising Executive credential since 1996. He
has been involved locally and nationally for many years as a
board member, presenter, and on committees of the
Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the
Giving Institute, formerly the American Association of Fund
Raising Counsel (AAFRC).
George served as Chairman
of Philanthropy Day on Long Island, a large, regional
educational conference on fund raising, leadership, and
development. He was also Vice Chairman, Awards Chairman,
and Professional Education Chairman.
He has served as an
adjunct professor at C.W. Post College teaching "Endowment
and Capital Campaigns." In addition, George has lectured at
the New York University School of Professional Studies
Program in fund raising. He speaks frequently at
conferences for fund raising professionals, volunteers, and
community groups.
George has an
M.B.A. with concentrations in Finance and Strategic Planning
from Adelphi University, and a B.S. degree in Finance from
Fordham University. George’s initial fund raising and fund
raising management training was through two certificate
courses completed with the National Academy of Voluntarism,
Alexandria, Virginia.
Previously, George
held executive positions with the United Way of Tri-State
and Boys and Girls Clubs of America, where his work involved
the creation of a new national identity, the implementation
of a 75th Anniversary Campaign, and the initiation of one of
the earliest marketing and awareness campaigns conducted by
a not-for-profit organization. He was an early proponent of
cause-related marketing and licensing for not-for-profit
organizations.
Mr. Ferguson presently
serves as Secretary of the Newtown Conservation Commission
and is a former member of Newtown (Connecticut) Inland
Wetlands Agency. He has coached in-house and travel youth
soccer since 1993. George completed the New York City
Marathon in 1990 and 1991. He resides in Newtown,
Connecticut, with his wife, Kathleen, and their three
children.
