Tim McDermott has more than 20 years experience as a professional fundraiser, including service at two of the most selective universities in the United States. During his career, he has managed every aspect of development: capital campaign execution, pre- and post-campaign activity, annual funds, and volunteer and board development. He also has developed an extensive background in the application of technology to the fundraising arena. Since beginning his consulting career three years ago, he has helped several organizations in the areas of strategic planning, feasibility studies, and campaign planning.

During his career in higher education, Tim served as the chief development officer for the medical schools at Brown University and the Medical College of Virginia. He also served appointments at Duke University, Virginia Wesleyan College, and at his alma mater, Virginia Tech. He has been an active presenter at professional conferences with the Association of American Medical Colleges, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Tim currently is conducting a campaign feasibility study for the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in collaboration with The Kellogg Organization, Inc., a strategic partner of Ruotolo Associates. He recently completed a long-term campaign planning assignment with the YMCA South Hampton Roads with The Kellogg Organization. He is leading Rubicon, Inc., a substance abuse and mental health treatment and recovery facility in Richmond, Va., through a strategic plan implementation in advance of a capital campaign.

Tim is actively involved in his community with youth soccer and the Catholic Church of the Redeemer near Richmond, Virginia. He is a member of the Department of Geography Advisory Committee at Virginia Tech. He served as a board member for Chesapeake Soccer Club for three years. He recently concluded his service as a member of the board of directors for the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross. Tim received his undergraduate degree in geography from Virginia Tech, his master’s in Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed some additional graduate work in medical sociology at Brown University. He and his wife, Esther, live in Ashland, Va., with the youngest two of their three children.
